A surprising post script to the gun story

It is so easy to transpose numbers! 
It turns out the the correct serial number on the mystery gun shows that it was made in 1898, not 1918. Therefore, it is quite possible that Mary Gertrude (my great aunt May) was right, that this was great grandpa Wm Q Davern's hunting rifle. Thanks to the gun sleuths in Lori's family. 
Any hunters in the bunch who want to find out how well this 117 year old rifle works?
